SO! If any of you all are group admins, you'll know that group notifications have all but disappeared :( I no longer get notified when there's a deviation submitted to the group.

Sorry, y'all. I'll try to keep checking, but there might be a slower than usual turn around time for submissions.

ALSO adopts/bases/YCHs/canon winx characters aren't allowed in the group, please stop submitting them.

Inktober 2018

6 min read
I did Inktober for the first time this year, and I did every day (I had to play catch up but that was scheduling and lack of materials not laziness/procrastination). For those of you who don't know, Inktober is a month-long art challenge where you make an inked piece of art every day. That's the only solid rule. There's an official prompt list every year, but I didn't use it, and instead used a list someone made for a Dragon Age Drawtober (so, all Dragon Age-related prompts).

Here's my Inktober postmortem:

It was... a really cool experience. I got to try out a lot of techniques and things that I'd never really done before. I mostly used microns and ohuhu alcohol markers, but I also used some gel pens and ballpoint pens and watercolors and tombow markers too. I flip-flopped between wishing that I had just picked one style of coloring so that I could have a cohesive batch of art and being grateful that I hadn't so that I didn't get bored doing just one thing the whole month.

Obviously, I like some pieces better than others. Some of my mistakes happened in the sketch, some of them happened in the inking, some of them happened when I was laying down color. One thing I've definitely realized is the power of the white gel pen. Days 17 and 27 were saved with that gel pen, and it's a super useful tool that I won't neglect when I make more traditional art. I also realized how much I love the splotchy look of watercolor. I feel like if I wanted a flat, even wash I would have done it digitally. The texture is really cool, and I kept trying to push myself to get more of it.

Now, I also just, like, couldn't have done Inktober before now. The way that I work wouldn't have allowed it. I have a relatively new lightbox, and it was -invaluable- for this project. Nothing (except those first three days and 11 where the pen sketch is the whole point) was sketched on the paper it was inked on. Everything was at least edited digitally before being printed and inked traditionally.

I also don't know if I could have done this with any other prompt list. The official Inktober prompt list is just... too broad for me. I think of myself more as an illustrator than an artist: I draw characters -from- things (be they from my things or someone else's). If it's not a character I know with a story I know, why am I wasting my time designing and investing in them? Finding this DA prompt list was a huge help. The 3.5 games and my 14 characters plus all the canon characters from it was a broad enough pool to draw from that I didn't get bored or feel trapped and a narrow enough pool that I didn't feel overwhelmed by my choices, trying to find one of my 100+ characters to fit into that prompt. Plus, taking the time to write the characters I planned to draw next to their prompts and all that was also super helpful. Nothing could sneak up on me and make me waste time planning instead of drawing.

So, I don't love every piece I made but I made every piece and I'm proud of that. If I do Inktober again, I'd love to get one of those, like, wheels of ink bottles and play around with that, just to add some more variety to what I'm able to make. I will definitely need to pre-assess what my prompt list will be, but if I can do that, I think I'll be all set.

A few of my favorites:

First, I have a Patreon!  Here is the link!  I'm keeping all my fan stuff here, but I'm moving my original content over there.  I've uploaded quite a bit of stuff on there (somethings you've seen that have been removed from this gallery, plus a lot of new art and writing), including a speedpaint and the full image for this piece:

I only have two Patrons right now and not a whole lot of engagement, but the more Patrons and feedback I have, the more I can tailor what I post to what y'all want.  Tiers start at $1/month.

I have a Kofi too, if that's more your speed~  Honestly, anything (including sharing around) is super helpful and I appreciate it a lot.

I posted about it already, but in case you missed it, I wrote and published a book!  It's a self-aware vampire romance novel that's full of fun and feels.  Imagine if Twilight had been good?  It's that.  Something that will vindicate you for all the bad things you ever thought about the genre without vilifying you for ever liking it in the first place.  Available in ebook and paperback form.  Reviews of it are super helpful, please and thank you.

Vampires Don't Need an Invitation by emilythesmelly

Those are the big things I wanted to cover.  I'm still posting (a lot) to dA, but only fan stuff now.  Mostly Marvel right now, tbh.
